GREECE NEEDS YOUR HELP

This text is written from a group of Greek persons in order to inform the people who live outside from Greece about the situation that exists in this country. We kindly ask from all the readers to send this text to everyone who cares about the human rights, as soon as possible, before the things become even wilder.

 On the 16 of October, a Korean tourist, who was walking in the center of Athens, identified by the surname Jeon was beaten from several Greek police officers without reason. Moreover, the police officers told the tourist to “go back to your country”. Of course, this was not the first incident of police brutality and racism in Greece. The results of the last election were fateful for the future. The Nazi organization of Golden Dawn managed to enter the Greek Parliament because of the votes of, almost, half a million Greeks. The Nazis took the percentage of 6, 9% and they elected 18 deputies. The economic crisis in Greece resulted in revealing the extremely low quality of the democracy.

According to the results of the same elections, at least the half of the Greek police officers voted the Nazis of the Golden Dawn! This element is very important under the purpose to explain why there is so much violence in the demonstrations and where all this racism comes from. It is not a secret anymore, that police is strongly connected with the members of the Golden Dawn and there is a wide exchange of information and sometimes cooperation between them. That is why there are countless attacks against immigrants and foreigners, even tourists, in the last months. Attacks that in many occasions are not even recorded from the police as forms of racism! Not to mention the fact that most of the immigrants are afraid to go to the police, because they know they will suffer. Even the lawyers of the immigrants are afraid to go to a specific police station in Athens, since it is common for the police to alert the members of Golden Dawn, who arrive quickly and occupy the place. 

The fascism was not a surprise for Greece. After the crisis, the state and the mass media realized that there is only one method that can insure stability and legality: The method of zero tolerance against the weakest parts of the collapsed society and those who react to government policy. Immigrants, HIV-positive prostitutes, arrested demonstrators, anarchists, bloggers and independent journalists had a good taste of the New Order. Some recent examples are the torture of the 15 anti-fascists demonstrators (the British newspaper “The Guardian” has published an article about the abuse of 15 demonstrators in the General Police Directorate of Athens and the subsequent outcome of the case) and the arrest of Kostas Baxebanis, the editor of a weekly magazine, for publishing a list of more than 2,000 names of wealthy Greeks who have placed money in Swiss bank accounts. 

The list, as Aljazeera supports, has inspired heated discussion in near-bankrupt Greece, where public anger at politicians and the wealthy elite grows as austerity measures take a toll on the poorer sections of society. Kostas Baxebanis said that:

"I did nothing other than what a journalist is obliged to do. I revealed the truth that they were hiding. If anyone is accountable before the law then it is those ministers who hid the list, lost it and said it didn't exist. I only did my job. I am a journalist and I did my job.

The important thing is that a group of people - when Greece is starving - make a profit and try to create the Greece they want. Tomorrow in parliament they will vote to cut 100-200 Euros in pay for the Greek civil servant, for the Greek worker while at the same time most of the 2,000 people on the list appear to be evading tax by secretly sending money to Switzerland”.

There is no doubt that the poor Greeks have lifted the burden of crisis, while the wealthy Greeks enjoy an unprecedented immunity, mainly by using the mass media that they own. Bankers, ship-owners and factory owners are trying constantly to privatize the profits and nationalize the damages. The consecutive reductions in salaries and pensions have triggered a social explosion and the people have pushed the boundaries. The rise of the Golden Dawn combined with immunity of the rich, police violence and imperiousness of the state will lead to unpleasant paths. All the readers of this text should demand the clearing of the Greek police of Nazi and fascist practices. Until then, it is preferable not to come to Greece for your own safety and at the same time denounce everywhere what we describe. Already, a respected part of the Greek society is waiting to hear the truth from the foreign media, because the Greek media is too corrupt.

People from Europe, America, Africa, Asia and Oceania we ask for your help. Speak of the above lines to as many as possible. The struggle of the Greek people is not enough. When you visit our country, our cities, our islands and our mountains, you are not in danger by desperate demonstrators protesting against the government policies and the presence of IMF, but by the police and members of the Golden Dawn. Know that the money you/they give to Greece go to the banks and the country's economy is in much worse condition than it was 3 - 4 years ago. Every day is nastier for the average Greek citizen and the state does not care at all. All they want is to keep things as they used to be and bring misery to the majority of the Greek people in order to save a few elites. Do not allow this to happen because it will lead Greece to a new kind of dictatorship and humanity will suffer from diseases that we thought we would never see again.
